It depends on the brand (checked October 2026)
- Patak's Plain Naans: vegan. Labelled suitable for vegans. The pack says "may also contain milk", which is about the factory, not the recipe.
- Aagrah Plain Naan: vegan. Labelled suitable for vegans.
- COOK Plain Naan: vegan and dairy free. COOK makes it in the same kitchen as non-vegan meals.
Why It's Confusing
Naan looks like plain flatbread. Dairy, yoghurt, milk, butter, or ghee, all sources of casein, is mixed into the dough during preparation and leaves no visual trace on the cooked bread.
Naan served alongside a vegan curry gives the impression the full meal is plant-based when the bread itself is not. "Plain naan" is not a reliable signal of a plant-based preparation.
Where It Commonly Appears

What To Watch For
- Yoghurt (dahi), milk, butter, ghee, clarified butter, milk powder, whey
- Egg (in some recipes)
- Brushed butter or ghee added after cooking, even when the dough is vegan
