Is Whiskey Vegan?

It depends on the brand (checked October 2026)

• Jack Daniel's: not vegan. Its own UK website says none of its whiskeys suit a vegan diet, because sheep's wool is used in filtering.
• Jameson: vegan. The company says no animal products are used in making or filtering it, and UK retailers list it as suitable for vegans.
• The Macallan: vegan. The company says no animal-derived products are used in production.
• Maker's Mark: vegan. Listed as vegan friendly on Barnivore.

Why It's Confusing

Whiskey is distilled from grain, water, and yeast. Distillation naturally clarifies the spirit, which means whiskey does not require the animal-derived fining agents (isinglass, casein, gelatin) that make beer and wine problematic for vegans. On paper, it should be straightforward. It is not.

Three categories create confusion.

First, honey-flavoured whiskeys. These contain real honey, not honey flavouring. Honey is classified as an animal product by The Vegan Society [[3]](#source-3). Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey, Bushmills Irish Honey, and Evan Williams Honey Reserve are all confirmed not vegan [[1]](#source-1). Any whiskey with "Honey" in the name should be assumed non-vegan unless the producer states otherwise.

Second, cream liqueurs. Whisky cream liqueurs contain dairy cream. Baileys Irish Cream, Penderyn Merlyn, Cotswolds Cream Liqueur, and similar products are not vegan.

Third, processing methods. Jack Daniel's uses a wool pad at the bottom of its charcoal mellowing vats during the Lincoln County Process [[2]](#source-2). The pad keeps charcoal in the vat while the whiskey flows through. It does not remain in the bottle, but contact with animal-derived material during processing disqualifies the product. Jack Daniel's confirmed in January 2022: "Unfortunately, Jack Daniel's and its expressions are not vegan friendly due to the filtration process." [[1]](#source-1) This applies to Black Label, Gentleman Jack, Single Barrel, Tennessee Rye, Tennessee Apple, and Tennessee Fire.

A less common issue: Cotswolds Distillery adds butter to the mash tun during mashing to prevent foaming. The butter is filtered out, but the company does not classify its whisky as vegan. Penderyn in Wales cannot guarantee vegan status because it sources casks from third-party suppliers whose processes are not verified.

• Bars, restaurants, hotel minibars, airline business class
• Duty-free shops and distillery tastings
• Cocktails: Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour, Manhattan, Irish Coffee
• Cooking, baking, and dessert sauces

What To Watch For

Confirmed vegan through Barnivore [[1]](#source-1):

• Jameson (all Irish whiskey expressions)
• Bushmills (Original, Black Bush, 10yr, 16yr, 21yr). Exception: Bushmills Irish Honey is not vegan.
• Glenfiddich
• The Glenlivet (cellulose pad filtration)
• Macallan (diatomaceous earth)
• Laphroaig (all expressions)
• Maker's Mark
• Suntory (Yamazaki, Hakushu, Hibiki, Chita, Toki). Bamboo charcoal filtration.

Confirmed not vegan [[1]](#source-1):

• Jack Daniel's (all standard expressions). Tennessee Honey also contains honey.
• Cotswolds Distillery (all whiskies): Butter in mash.
• Penderyn (all whiskies): Third-party cask suppliers.
• All honey-flavoured whiskeys and all cream liqueurs.

Jim Beam: check required. Sources currently disagree, so check the bottle or ask the brand.

Scotch Single Malt is legally restricted to malted barley, yeast, and water under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009 [[4]](#source-4), making it structurally the safest category. Japanese whisky from Suntory is the most comprehensively verified clean category among major global producers.

Vegan Alternatives

For a confirmed vegan whiskey: Jameson, Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet, Macallan, Maker's Mark, and the Suntory range (most recently confirmed December 2025) [[1]](#source-1).

For bourbon: Elijah Craig, Evan Williams (core line, not Honey Reserve or Egg Nog), and Maker's Mark.

Avoid any product with "Honey," "Cream," or "Liqueur" in the name unless independently verified.
